  • Ranking Tournaments for U14, U16 and U19 AA teams

The decision to use Ranking Tournaments rather than the Wild Card Ranking Formula for the 2009-2010 playing season was a result of the changes being requested by teams, the ORA Board of Directors and the implementation of the LTAD program.
Teams were expressing concerns that there was an imbalance in the number of tournaments that some teams were entering and being accepted into.
There were concerns that one or two “AA” teams were being left out of Provincial attendance and with the move towards all-inclusive championships being part of the Long Term Athlete Development Model it was felt that we could adopt that format this season.
LTAD also has included a competitive structure that has teams developing through the months of October to December and reaching a peak competitive level through January-March.  The process allows for two Ranking Tournaments through January and February spaced about 3 weeks apart with the final tournament occurring approximately 3 weeks before the Provincial Championship.
A number of scenarios were put forth regarding the optimal method of structuring the Ranking Tournaments and ultimately the decision was reached to split the Province into 2 “pools” with each team playing the other teams in their “pool” twice, once per Ranking Tournament.   Each Region with teams at “AA” was given a Tournament to Host.  In order to minimize the impact on overall tournament attendance across the province, two tournaments being held on the same weekends were chosen in both January and February.
The results of the round robin games between the Ontario teams will be collected and teams will be ranked 1-10 in the U14 and U19 divisions and 1-12 in the U16 division for scheduling at the Provincial event in Nepean.
A few questions have arisen regarding the tie-breaking.  The G&T committee has always used the tie-breaking format in the G&T section of the Operating Manual when breaking ties in the standings whether it is in a tournament, the Provincials or the Wild Card Rankings.   Using them to break any ties that may occur in the Rankings between the two “pools” is no different than when they are used to break a tie in an unbalanced round robin.

When a tie occurs in the ranking order of teams for the AA Provincial Championship, the rules listed in the Operating Manual, G&T section, page 19, f. Ranking of Tied Teams will be used.
